Keep your growing kids busy!!

My son will soon be 5 years old and like other parents i do not want him to get lost in TV, Mobile or Ipad. So everyday i try to think of getting him an activity that could last for a good time and also grab his eyeballs, keep him interested and excited. I am also fine with some screen time but with control and FireTV from amazon gives me that. The only condition being it should be educational and should keep him challenged. Below are things i have tried. Do let me know if you have other suggestions. I plan to keep this post updated as i find new ways

TV shows:
Note: All of them are also available for free on youtube
ABCD, Phonics:
Books:
If this is the first time, I will suggest doing the 3 letter words, rhyming books, these are good started:
Once he is into books, this might be really good
Tip: One thing i have learned is that whatever activity you do, continue to repeat it for quite some time, this will make your child get it faster and he will remember it.

Drawing Books: This books are really good to get your kid interested towards drawing
Paper Art/Origami:
My son really enjoys this, we try to make the following together
  • boat
  • airplane
  • heart
  • flower
  • a Jet
  • frog
Mobile:
TODO: I will try to list the apps i have tried
  • Puzzles
  • Drawings
  • Stories

Daily Routine with my Kid
  • We try to read 2 books a day and a story sometime using Youtube and Nigh time prayer to enforce some good behavior.
  • next day I try to ask him to repeat the story and work with him
  • We check with him - what happened in school, how was his day. how are his friends and so on...

Memory Games:
  • Like you start with 2-3 people. Lets assume - mom/dad and a kid.
    • Mom will say A for Apple.
    • Father will say A for Apple, B for Banana
    • Son will say A for Apple, B for Banana, C for Cat and so on
  • Tell a story and ask him to repeat it
    • We use the Lion, Mouse Story
    • Hare - Tortoise one
    • Ant - Pigeon
Writing:
  • Get the dotted font and print A-Z and 0 to 9 on multiple sheets
  • Get drawings of animals, things, cars he like and use crayons to color
  • This will get him to learn how to hold a pencil and pen and use them nicely
Games:
  • Lego Duplo sets
  • Lego Sets
  • Cars, Train set
  • Drawing Books

Dancing:
Just Dance game is your best bet here to get him interested in that, some of the youtube videos i use
Playing with my Son:
Indoors:
  • Nerf Guns
  • Lego
  • Football
  • Cricket

This is still not organized properly and and many things to be done. Let me know what you feel and have more ideas to add to. All suggestions are welcome. Happy Parenting.

Lastly wanted to share something i like but not fully support it:

“Act like a parent, talk like a peer. I call it peerenting. ”  It’s Phil Dunphy lines in Modern Family. It’s clever, it’s an honest approach and it always makes me laugh.
Final Parting thoughts: Always be appreciative of your kid and try to enforce that, never use negative words. This will make him be appreciative of things in general and improve on his confidence to try new things and learn them.
